The sideboard has been a mainstay of dining rooms since the 16th century. More often than not, these pieces were used to hold cutlery, china, and other eating utensils; much as today’s modern cabinetry. The sideboard became a common piece of furniture in a time before fitted kitchen cabinets existed.

The sideboard, or buffet, first became popular on the European continent, and by the late eighteenth century, they had become a common fixture in British dining rooms, as well. Today, they grace dining rooms as the main feature, second only to the table.
